Background

So, I bought a bike, because my old one was stolen, and decided to do some cycling in Finland. I've always enjoyed cycling in the traditional get-around-quite-quickly-and-easily sense but I'm far from the competitive circles who like to pedal fast and cover vast distances. My home town of Oulu is an excellent city for cyclists but I want to the travel west coast of Finland and experience the small backroads of the Finnish countryside. Finland is a long country - in the European scale - and there's plenty of pavement to conquer.

I bought a cheap digital SLR camera in order to better document my travels. It's a long time since I Iast handled SLR cameras and I'm not going use the automated settings, because about ten years ago I tried really hard to learn the right settings. We'll see if I can remember some of them.

After making semi-careful financial plans and reading lots of user experiences and reviews of bikes, I decided to invest in a nice hybrid Nishiki 422 (pictured below). I've been very satisfied with the choice. More about the rest of the travel gear in future posts.

I drew up preliminary plans of the trip that I'm going to carry out during the first two weeks of July. It is only a rough outline of the cities that the actual route is going to go through but you get the idea. The points in the map represent places where I might spend the sun-filled summer nights but this might change along the way. I'll discuss these plans in greater detail later.
